Description: These opaque orange wound barrel-shaped glass beads were probably made in Bohemia in the late 19th or early part of the 20th century. They were traded to countries where large coral beads were valued such as Yemen, Nepal and Tibet, and were - and still are - worn by local tribespeople instead of real coral beads which were very costly. Some of these glass beads even have small holes in them to resemble true coral. The wound orange glass has a very slight colour variation which increases the beads' similarity to real coral. However, in tribal necklaces, several 'coral' beads of an exactly matching size is generally a pretty good indication that they are not real coral: true coral was very expensive and when beads were carved from a piece of raw coral from the sea bed, each bead was made as large as possible, rather than being reduced in size to match another bead. Today these wound glass beads have become collectors' items. Barrel-shaped coral beads like these were particularly valued in Yemen. In Morocco, the most valued coral beads are round and are known as 'coraille de pomme' ('apple coral') because their shape resembles an apple.

Description: Millefiore beads were made in Venice in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Venice had a great tradition of glass bead-making, and in the period when European countries were exploring Africa and Asia, thousands and thousands of Venetian beads of many types were traded to Africa and Asia in return for gold, ivory and jungle products. 'Millefiore' means 'thousands of flowers' in Italian, and the name comes from the glass canes which were inserted into the beads to make the 'millefiore' designs. Millefiore beads were traded particularly to West and North Africa. They were made in many 100s of different designs and are very collectible!

Length: 17mm approx.

Condition: There is a small chip on one end of this bead. It is still a beautiful object!
